When visiting foreign countries some people think that it is advantageous to learn their cultures and traditions. How do you think people can learn other cultures and traditions?
With the fascinating development of world economy, more and more people are able to afford traveling abroad. The idea of learning another culture during traveling sounds tempting, yet people always find it is in fact very difficult to do so. In my opinion and based on my own experience, individuals can acquire the culture of their tourist destination through two ways. In the following essay, I will demonstrate them respectively.
The first way to learn another culture is to know something about the destination so that people can get prepared. It is not uncommon to find people complain after traveling abroad that they cannot get used to the life there and they find it extremely difficult to adopt the local traditions. Therefore, my first suggestion would be prepare oneself before the beginning of the journey. By doing so, individuals can not only learn the new culture more quickly but they may also adopt to the new environment more swiftly. To achieve this goal, people could try to read the local news or books about this new country. Besides, some television programs, such as the Discovery Channel and National Geography provide a wide variety of TV shows that contains information about a foreign resort. Thus, people who are going to travel abroad could equipped themselves with information provided on TV. Moreover, travel agencies are always a good resource to seek for help. Individuals are encouraged and welcomed to ask their agency any questions that bother them. Also, travel agency would arrange information sections or meetings to help traveler get familiar with their destination.
The second method to learn a new tradition or culture is through talking with the locals. This may seem difficult to achieve since the language of local residents is likely different from those of the tourists. Yet once this approach is applied, individuals would find it much more easy for them to learn and experience the local culture. Although in the past few decades, the pace of development of tourism is beyond our imagination, tourism still cannot satisfy people's need to experience a new culture. This issue mainly contributed by the fact that travelers tent to travel in groups and under the guide of an agency, hence they seldom have the opportunity to talk to locals and involve in local life. If individual could communicate with local residents and learn the original tradition from them, he or she is able to have a more profound understanding of the lifestyle, history as well as culture of the locals.
To sum up, there are two essential ways that people can use to learn a new culture when traveling abroad. The first one is to get themselves prepared and familiar with the culture or tradition of their tourist destination. In addition, individual can also acquire the knowledge through direct talking with local residents.
